Elevated Serum Levels in Humanpregnancy of a Molecule Immunochemically Similar to Eosinophil

چکیده
In 1956 Gansler (1) observed infiltration of the rat uterus by eosinophils coincident with the estrus cycle . This observation was confirmed and extended by the work of Bassett (2) and Ross and Klebanoff (3) . Since then, various investigations have shown (a) that injection of estrogen into castrated or immature rodents leads to immediate uterine eosinophilia (4-10), (b) that the uterine eosinophil is marrow derived (11), (c) that the uterine eosinophil number varies >100-fold during the normal estrus cycle (12), (d) that uterine content of eosinophil peroxidase varies directly with the estrus cycle (13, 14), (e) that eosinophils possess a unique cell surface estrogen receptor (4-9), and (f) that estrogen-induced uterine eosinophilia apparently has no dependence upon uterine mast cell activity (15-18). In contrast, there are few observations relating eosinophils to human reproductive physiology . Cyclic eosinopenia correlating with ovulation has been reported (19-21) and cyclic variations in endometrial eosinophils and their uptake of tritiated estradiol have also been observed (22) . However, no role for the eosinophil in normal human reproduction is presently recognized . During the course of studies of hypersensitivity diseases in pregnancy we found that serum levels of a molecule immunochemically similar to the eosinophil granule major basic protein (MBP)' were elevated in all pregnant women, increasing during pregnancy and decreasing to normal levels after parturition . Because eosinophilia is not a feature of normal pregnancy, and serum levels of other eosinophil proteins are not elevated, the results of this study suggest that the immunoreactive MBP in pregnancy serum is derived from a source other than the eosinophil .

Elevated serum levels in human pregnancy of a molecule immunochemically similar to eosinophil granule major basic protein
We have shown that serum levels of a molecule immunochemically similar to eosinophil granule major basic protein (MBP) are elevated in pregnant women throughout gestation. MBP levels increase during gestation and plateau at approximately 7,500 ng/ml by the 20th wk (greater than 10-fold above normal). Levels return to normal after delivery, with a T1/2 of 13.7 d. The MBP in pregnancy serum is re...
متن کاملLocalization of a molecule immunochemically similar to eosinophil major basic protein in human placenta
We have recently reported that human pregnancy is characterized by a 10- to 20-fold elevation of eosinophil major basic protein (MBP) immunoreactivity in maternal blood. Here we show, by immunofluorescence, that placental tissue specifically binds antibody to MBP in and around the placental X cells and placental-site giant cells and, using thin plastic sections, that placenta has no infiltratin...
متن کاملElevated serum levels of the eosinophil granule major basic protein in patients with eosinophilia.
A radioimmunoassay was established for the human eosinophil granule major basic protein (MBP). The mean level of MBP in sera from 105 normal control patients was 454 ng/ml, whereas in a sample of 188 patients with various forms of diseases, including the hypereosinophilic syndrome, levels as high as 14,000 ng/ml were measured. Serum levels of MBP did not correlate with eosinophil counts in norm...
متن کاملThe Role of Inflammatory Biomarkers in the Management of Children with Asthma
Background Making decision on asthma as an inflammatory disease is done mostly on the airways function and the patient symptoms which most of them are nonspecific and subjective. Also, the children are not able to express their signs and collaboration in examination of the lungs function. Evaluation of serum level inflammatory biomarkers can be useful in assessment of the response to treatment ...
متن کاملIs There Correlation between Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria and Elevated Serum IgE? A Pilot Study
Background: The etiology of urticaria is recognized only in a minority of cases. Allergies to a wide variety of agents have been suspected, as well as hyper reactivity to food additives or drugs. Recently, autoimmune reaction to immunoglobulin E (IgE) and later to high-affinity IgE receptors on mast cells has been reported. The aim of this study was to show elevated serum IgE levels in the pati...
